The Jack Russell Terrier is very alert, confident, bold and inquisitive breed. They are excellent watchdogs and extremely loyal and fearless. They make fun-loving friends for children, but may not be the breed of choice for very young children who may not realize they are being rough.
Some people have labeled the JRT as
being "hyperactive" and that is really
not true. They are an active breed and
you need to find ways to channel their
energy. For example: walks, games, and
obedience classes. Most Jack Russell's
are sweet, if mischievous, companions
and they love to show off.
The Jack Russell Terriers were originally
12 to 15 inches in height. The Parson
Jack Russell preferred the longer legged
dogs.
The shorter legged ones were sometimes
referred to as the English Jack Russell
Terriers.
The longer legged JRT is considered to be
the true breed representative but JRT's can
be as short as 9 inches. The shorter ones are
very popular for house pets where the longer
ones are used for fox and squirrel hunting.
They can have smooth, broken, or
rough coats. Ideally, they are to be at
least 51% white and can have either
brown or black and tan markings.
The broken and rough coats ideally
need stripped, pulling out the longer dead
hairs and allowing the new hair to grow
Back in its place. The best time to do this
is when the dog is naturally shedding,
which is once or twice a year.
The Jack Russell Terrier is a working
terrier
named after the Parson Jack Russell,
who was the person responsible for
establishing the breed.
He worked with his Jack Russell Terriers
for 65 years.
