The English Mastiff is the largest breed of dog. They have a regal and noble bearing and are gentle, steady, and devoted. Not agressive to humans or other animals, they are called the "gentle giants" and are good with children, permitting them to play with him and suffering all their little pranks with out offence. Mastiffs are deeply affecionate
and in spite of their great size, very sensitive.
Their one great desire in life seems to be to please those they love so much, and no disciplinary action beyond the tone of voice is ever necessary. They make excellent guard dogs. Being greeted at the gate by a breed as sizeable as the Mastiff is sure to scare away any potential intruders.
The average English Mastiff male is 30 inches in height (minimum) at the shoulder and weight is approximately between 170 and 220 pounds.
Average females are 27 1/2 inches (minimum) in heightat the shoulder and between 130 and 180 pounds in weight. It is best to keep an English
Mastiff a good size and not let them get over weight. This can cause health problems.
The English Mastiff is double coated with a medium short, coarse and smooth topcoat and a short, dense undercoat. They do not reqire
a lot of brushing and their coat does not mat as longer coated dogs do.
The English Mastiffs (sometimes refered to as Mastiffs) are a breed with a long and colorful history spanning several continents and centuries.
Several of the breeds we know today were either derived from, or influenced by, the introduction of Mastiff blood. However, Great
Britian is considered the origin of the English Mastiff as we know it today.
